How to read a hand
Every winning hand is fourteen tiles, grouped. A single is one tile, a pair is two, a pung is three of a kind, a kong is four, and a quint is five. The tiles pictured are one example of a winning set; where a hand allows more than one suit, the description tells you (for instance, "any two suits") — you pick the suits, the pattern stays the same.
How the game is played
The Charleston
Before play begins, everyone trades tiles to shape a hand toward the card. You pass three tiles to the right, three across, and three to the left; the table may then agree to a second round the other way. Nothing forces you to keep tiles you can't use — the Charleston is your first chance to steer toward a hand you like. At our tables it's walked step by step, and you can always see how many passes are left.
Claiming a discard
When another player throws away a tile you need, you can claim it to finish a pung, kong or quint — or to declare your win. Call for the tile before the next player draws, then set the completed group face-up on your rack for everyone to see. Play carries on from your right. A claim always has to complete a named group or win the hand; you can't grab a discard just to hold it.
A dead hand
A hand is "dead" when it can no longer be finished legally — say an exposed group that matches nothing on the card, or the wrong number of tiles on the rack. A dead hand sits out the rest of that game, but you stay at the table and play the next one. Our referee watches for this and flags it for you, so a game never ends by surprise.
Jokers
A joker is wild inside any group of three or more — a pung, kong or quint — standing in for whatever tile that group needs. A joker can never fill a pair or a single. If a joker is showing in someone else's exposed group, on your turn you may swap the matching real tile for it and take the joker into your hand.
